Beckenham Apartment
2024
This compact ground-floor apartment was designed to offer privacy while balancing the client’s needs to efficiently work and entertain. The existing plan was in dire need of reconfiguration: it had an oversized bathroom that compromised other spaces, and did not make use of the three aspects of natural light available from the apartment’s windows. The awkward spaces, combined with the somewhat dilapidated condition, led us to gut the interior of all studwork and flooring.
As with many of our projects, the rooms revolve around centrepieces of furniture: to make the most of the property’s angled walls, we produced bespoke cabinetry with fileted corners to convey softness and movement. Reflecting our client’s preference for a clean aesthetic, we minimised the palette of materials, focusing on white walls and solid oak joinery.
We introduced subtle colour with the green kitchen backsplash tiles, handmade in our London workshop. Deeper shades of green likewise lend character to the bathroom; here, with no natural light to work with, we leant into the darkness, creating a seductive space with emerald-tiled walls and a high-gloss ceiling, matched with a warm-toned, handmade iroko cabinet.
The resulting apartment is balanced and highly functional, with elegant and joyful design details throughout.
